No News

Sorry, folks.  I tried.  Nothing really newsworthy today.  But, here's an interesting article...

HP Ink Costs More Than Human Blood

From the Sad But True Dept.

According to this article on The Consumerist, HP Ink is actually more costly per mL than human blood.  If I'm not mistaken, I think there was an article a few years ago that talked about how inkjet ink was the single most expensive liquid on earth.

You know that this stuff costs no where near this price to manufacture.

Half-Life 2 on Project Natal

Have you heard about Project Natal?  The Microsoft thing where you control your computer by your movements?  Kind of cool tech.  You can see it in action in this video.  I'd like to see something like this come around for my game of choice.  Or being able to plug the game directly into your head.  Or something.

Linux and Gaming

There is an article up at AnandTech about Linux, gaming, and, well, Linux gaming performance.  Linux gaming, it seems, is where I left it three or four years ago -- right on the edge of being where it wants to be.

In it's defense, there really isn't any type of application more demanding of on OS or hardware than gaming.  It stresses all of the major components -- processor and GPU.  Without native executables, the strain is often too much -- there is only so much performance you can wring out of an emulated/simulated environment.

Linux is still coming out of its infancy as far as "normal" users are concerned; it's been a major player in the server room for quite a while now, so there is hope for it.  However, until native code gets let loose from the major game makers, and the Linux kernel devs start using a *stable* ABI/API (I hate it when a program (UT99) works great on one Linux release and won't run without major futzing around on the next), I think the Linux ball will continue to roll very slowly.

A History of Modems

For those of you who still remember these things, here's a pretty decent (short) history of modems.

The first brush I had with them was when my next-door neighbor's dad brought home a small suitcase that had a phone cradle inside it and an attached keyboard and printer.  There was no screen.  All commands went in like a typewriter and all the feed back printed out on the paper as well.  It was cool.  We played Adventure but never made it past the demon in front of the gate.

Later, when I was all grown up, I got my first modern 486-based computer.  It had a 2400-baud modem.  I still remember dialing in to the local BBS's and watching the text print out

O N E  L E T T E R  A T  A  T I M E

(the blink tag was big back then)

and sending email through fidonet.

Good times.

Merry Christmas!

While we never want to forget what the season is really all about, there is apparently a Jolly Old Elf flitting through the atmosphere at incredible speed -- and NORAD is tracking him.

See you after Christmas.

Unreal Engine 3 on an iPod Touch

This almost makes me want to cry.  UT3 chokes down my "gaming" machine at home.  It's totally unplayable.  Granted, this is *probably* a slightly different version of the game than the stock UT3 that you can pick up for the PC, but still.  You can play things on bloody phone that kills my best system.  Maybe it's time for an upgrade...

Get the whole story here at Anandtech.

Thank You Government Takeovers!

This just in from the This Sucks and It's Stupid Dept.

According to this article, GM is rolling out the last of it's big-block V8's.  I guess it's going to put all of it's eggs in the diesel basket or just cede the heavy-duty truck market to Ford.

I hate to see stuff like this happen.  It's almost like an end of an era.  And, yeah, I'm getting a bit worked up over this but my family and I have always been GM fans.  After the takeover, not so much.  I hate to do it, but I'll be a Ford customer from now on.
